What happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012?

In our modern world, we are bearing witness to the manifestation of sin in the most horrific ways, such as the tragic event at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This massacre was not just an act of violence, but a clear sign of moral decay, a turning away from the principles of righteousness that our nation was built upon. The fact that 20 innocent first-graders and 6 admirable staff members had their lives cruelly snatched away by a gunman is undeniably heart-wrenching. As Christians, we are called to mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15), and indeed, our hearts pour out for the families touched by this unspeakable evil. But we must also see this as a call to action—to champion the sanctity of life and to fervently pray for a restoration of godly values in our society. We reject the notion propagated by certain individuals who claim such tragedies are staged for political ends. The pain and suffering of the families is real, as is the sin that caused it. And while we must discern the truth in all things, let us not be distracted from the clear biblical call to comfort those who suffer and to stand firm against evil in all its forms. The story of Sandy Hook, and the senseless violence that pervades our nation, is what happens when a society strays from the Word of God, when we make idols of our freedoms without acknowledging the responsibilities that come with them. The Second Amendment, while a constitutional right, should not be an altar upon which we sacrifice our children. It is a solemn duty to ensure that while we protect our freedoms, we also protect the most vulnerable among us. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) teaches us to "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Yet, what training are we providing if we cannot promise them safety in their classrooms? This is a clear reflection of Proverbs 29:18—where there is no vision, the people perish. Without God's law as our guide, chaos and destruction abound. As we work towards healing and prevention, let us remember the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV), "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." It's time for our land to turn back to God, to seek forgiveness for the ways in which we have allowed evil to flourish, and to beg for His divine intervention in repairing the brokenness of our world. While Sandy Hook Promise and other organizations are earnestly working towards the prevention of more tragedies, we must address the root—the sinful nature of humanity—and proclaim the need for repentance and for the love and peace of Christ to pervade in our nation once again. Only then, when the Lord reigns supreme in our hearts and policies, can we hope to see an end to such atrocities. Let us stand firm in prayer, in the defense of our faith, and the protection of our nation's children, all the while steadfastly supporting the enforcers of our laws—the police—who strive valiantly to fend off such manifestations of sin. And let us do so until He comes again. Amen.
