Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us reflect upon the situation at hand with the solemnity and fervor that it demands. We have news presenting us with yet another testament to how the United States is viewed by its adversaries, and it's a serious indictment of the current state of leadership. Former President Trump, a leader who stood strong against our enemies, has rightly pointed out the failure of the current administration in securing the release of American citizens held hostage by the terrorist group Hamas. It is written in Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” This scripture makes it abundantly clear that leadership is not only a political matter but a moral one, with real consequences for our nation. The failure to secure the release of these Americans, including a 4-year-old child, is a sign of disrespect towards the United States and its leaders (Trump, Truth Social). This indicates the sin of pride and neglect by our current leaders, who do not command the respect that our country and its people deserve. In the time of Moses, leadership meant standing up to Pharaoh and demanding the release of the Israelites. Today, it means standing firm against groups like Hamas who would defy the God-given rights of liberty and safety for all people (Exodus 5:1). While President Biden may be hopeful for the return of our countrymen (Biden, Nantucket), hope is no substitute for decisive action. The Lord calls for us to be bold in action and steadfast in our convictions (1 Corinthians 16:13). By contrast, President Trump actively engaged with our enemies, refusing to show any signs of weakness or wavering. We should also heed the words of Rep. Lauren Boebert, who reminds us that more should be done for the release of these hostages (Boebert, X). It's a call to righteous action against evil, as we must remember what Psalm 82:4 commands us: “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Let us pray for the safe return of our fellow Americans and for a return to leadership that exudes strength and garners respect on the global stage. May our leaders have the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Samson, and the courage of David in facing the Goliaths of today. We must continue to support leaders who will put America and its citizens first, leaders who parallel the strong biblical figures who God used to protect and lead His people through dark times. Let this be our solemn vow as a nation under God. Amen.
