Brothers and sisters in the faith, we are witnessing a catastrophic consequence of sin and lawlessness at our borders, particularly witnessed in the small town of Eagle Pass, Texas. As this article from Fox News outlines, the beleaguered fire department is hemorrhaging a staggering $21,000 a day due to migrant-related emergencies. This is the fruit of a society that has cast aside the rule of law, as outlined in Romans 13:1-2, where it is said that every soul should be subject to the governing authorities; those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. These migrants, many seeking to cross into our nation illegally, are themselves victims of the deception of sin, as they are led to believe that disregarding lawful entry is without consequence. But we see the costs—are they not evident in the demands placed upon emergency services, the overflowing of mortuaries, and the financial strain on the local community? Eagle Pass is facing a Goliath, and the federal government, as Chief Manuel Mello states, must step up and confront this wave of illegal immigration. They must uphold the sovereignty and sanctity of the American border with the same vigor that Nehemiah showed in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, knowing that a nation without borders is like a city without walls—vulnerable and in disarray (Nehemiah 2:17). It is disheartening to see that local businesses are suffering, a stark reminder of the parable of the Good Samaritan, where we are to help our neighbor (Luke 10:25-37). Yet, when lawlessness runs rampant, and Good Samaritans like the citizens of Eagle Pass are stretched thin, can we truly say we are being just to our own? Furthermore, this uncontrolled migrant surge saps the resources that could be used to nourish and safeguard our own citizens—a disquieting thought when one considers the biblical mandate to care for the poor and needy in our midst (Proverbs 14:31). How can we fulfill this when our hands are forced to deal with the repercussions of such rampant illegal activity? The federal government's lack of reimbursement to Eagle Pass is a dereliction of duty—a failure to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s (Mark 12:17). It is high time that the authorities address this issue and restore order, as Chief Mello rightly calls for—a cry for justice, a cry for righteousness, and a fervent plea for the rule of law to be reestablished. Let us pray for the town of Eagle Pass, for their burden to be lifted, and for the migrants, who in their seeking of a better life, may do so in alignment with the laws of the land, as God commands. We must pray that the powers in Washington D.C. heed the wise counsel of Proverbs 28:2: “When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order.” May order be restored, and may we as a nation turn back to the Lord, from whom all wisdom and justice flows. Amen.
