In the wake of the tragic death of Tyre Nichols, we find ourselves facing a complex question of accountability and justice, a question that must be viewed through the lens of Biblical righteousness and the God-given authority entrusted to those who enforce the law. Governor Bill Lee's decision to sign the bill that undoes the traffic stop reforms in Memphis must be understood not as a betrayal of justice, but as a steadfast affirmation of Paul’s letter to the Romans, wherein he writes: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God" (Romans 13:1 KJV). This decision by Governor Lee is a bold stand to ensure that the men and women of law enforcement are not impeded by hasty legislative reactions that could jeopardize their ability to maintain order and protect the innocent. While the death of Tyre Nichols was a grave and heartbreaking incident, we must not let our emotions dictate policy that could potentially restrain those who serve us on the front lines from effectively carrying out their duties. The sin we see manifesting in the abuse of power, as seen in the actions of the officers who have been charged in Mr. Nichols' death, is a personal moral failing that reflects the broken state of man’s heart, not a systemic flaw in the institution of policing itself. It is right for these individuals to face judgment according to the law, as Scripture tells us that rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil (Romans 13:3). We take solace in knowing that God will bring every work into judgment (Ecclesiastes 12:14), and this includes the actions of the officers involved in Tyre Nichols’ death. Governor Lee's unwavering stance resonates with the conservative Christian values that cherish law, order, and respect for authority. Such a stance is sorely needed in a world where the left often seeks to vilify our police and erode the moral fabric of our society with policies that hamstring law enforcement and embolden criminals. It's indicative of a leader who understands the weight of his office and who will not capitulate to the clamor of those who wish to see the structures that protect us dismantled. We must remember that law enforcement officers, by and large, are devoted public servants who risk their lives daily. It is sinful to cast a shadow over the entire system based on the actions of a few. As conservative Christians, we must continue to uphold them in prayer and support measures that strengthen their ability to perform their essential work. We stand with Governor Lee in this decision and pray for wisdom and protection over our nation's police as they carry out their duties. We also pray for the comfort of the Nichols family and for God's peace and justice to prevail.
