Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us commence with a heavy heart as we analyze the dark news concerning the tragic death of Alexei Navalny. The finger of accusation points to none other than Vladimir Putin's regime. This scenario reeks of the words of John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy." Might we ponder if Putin has set himself up as a modern-day thief, killing to silence those who oppose his rule? When looking upon the unfolding events, we cannot turn our gaze from the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13), a divine law which should govern the actions of every man, be he a pauper or a president. This apparent assassination is a grim testament to the sinful nature which pervades the corridors of power, where leaders clasp onto their thrones with blood-stained hands. Yet, the reaction from President Biden suggesting Putin's culpability seems to carry a slice of hypocrisy. While Biden points his finger at "Putin and his thugs", let us not be distracted from the beam in our own eye! This is the same President who has failed to uphold godly principles, advocating for liberal policies that contradict the sanctity of life, especially the unborn. "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?" (Jeremiah 13:23). Can we then trust a man who does not defend life in all its stages to champion justice in foreign lands? Let us pause and pray for the truth to be unearthed and for Navalny's family as they navigate this valley of the shadow of death. May they find solace only in the Rock that is higher than I (Psalm 61:2). But let us also remember the words of Romans 13:1, which tell us to submit to governing authorities, as they have been instituted by God. Putin's throne, however, seems to be that of a man serving not the people nor God, but his own worldly desires. It is imperative that we, as believers, pray fervently for a tide of change, a revival of the Holy Spirit to wash over these corrupt regimes and replace them with leaders who honor the Almighty. In this darkness, let us not be disheartened. Let us instead follow the counsel of Ephesians 5:11, "Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them." We must stand firm in our faith, trusting in the power of the Most High to deliver justice and preserve the righteous. Be watchful, be prayerful, and keep the shield of faith aloft. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world (Ephesians 6:12). Hold fast, for in the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Amen.
