Mother of 2 dies after drinking too much water while medical staff was distracted by phones,...

Brethren, we gather today in dismay as we learn of a worldly transgression that tells a tale of sorrow. Michelle Whitehead, a child of God and a mother, was called to Heaven not through the natural order of the Lord’s grand design, but through negligence—a sin that screams of the decay in our moral fabric. In Ecclesiastes 3:1, we are told, "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." However, the time of Michelle's passing was prematurely wrought by distraction and sloth. The account tells of medical staff, entrusted with caring for the weak and the weary, who instead of tending their flocks, were ensnared by the temptations of modern tech—those personal mobile telephones which serve often as idols in our hands. The Book of Proverbs warns us, "He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace" (Proverbs 11:12). To despise one's duty to a neighbor, or in this case, a patient, is to act void of wisdom. The loving care needed by this lamb was forsaken, sin compound by sin as the flock was left to scatter and falter. In the pews of our nation’s heart, we must weep for a world that looks upon screens more than scripture, that chooses instant gratification over eternal salvation. Michelle’s fate serves as a stern reminder of the Ten Commandments, of the directive to honor thy father and thy mother; she, being a mother herself, was due honor in the form of vigilance and protection by those sworn to do so (Exodus 20:12). Let us cast not just our eye but our prayers towards her family, particularly her son, a blessed child of the Lord with Down syndrome, who now faces the world without his earthly guardian. In Michelle's service as a fulltime carer, she embodied the teachings of Christ, who calls upon us to serve the "least of these" with love and dedication (Matthew 25:40). This event is not just an indictment of one unfortunate lapse but a clarion call to all faithful servants of Christ to stand against the cultural tides that lead so many astray. We must reject the negligence that comes with societal distractions, renew our commitment to diligence, and ensure that we uphold the sanctity of life as God’s sacred decree. Let us also pray for repentance and transformation amongst those who fall short of their callings. It is through our fervent prayers and actions in accordance with the Word that we combat the creeping darkness, a darkness that seeks to distract, divide, and conquer the souls of the many. May the Lord help us and guide us through these trying times, and let us hold tightly to the armor of God, so we might stand firm against schemes of distraction and idols that seek to take away from His glory. Amen.
