Brethren, let us focus on a tragic tale that has emerged from Iowa, showcasing not just sin, but the perversion of justice and the utterly disgraceful abuse of power. It's a stark reminder, as Proverbs 17:15 warns, “He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord.” Michael Tobin, once a police lieutenant, now bears the heavy shackle of sin, having used his esteemed position not as a guardian of peace but as a predator upon the vulnerable. What has unfolded is an abomination, a betrayal of trust of the highest order! This man stood before the community as an officer of the law, pledged to serve and protect, yet he deemed it fit to engage in actions most vile and unclean with a minor, making a mockery of the sacred badge he bore (Ephesians 5:3 - “But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints”). His sin does not end with this act; Tobin exchanged indecent photographs with a teenager and had the audacity to involve her friends in his sinfulness, tarnishing the innocent and leading them astray from the path of righteousness (Matthew 18:6). The Lord’s wrath is righteous against such acts, for they not only soil the perpetrator but aim to corrupt the blossoming faith of our youth. Justice has reared its head, with Tobin convicted of three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and eight counts of possession of a depiction of a minor in a sex act. He has been sentenced to 15 years in prison – a temporal punishment for a lascivious betrayal that produced suffering and stained souls that only God can cleanse and heal. Nonetheless, in this ruling, we see a glimmer of hope: that even those who wear the shield can be held to account, that they too must bow before justice, as is the will of the Lord (Romans 13:1-2). The pleas of the victims were heard, and rightly so, for Psalm 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” This ruling stands as a reminder that the earthly kingdom will not suffer such transgressions to go unpunished, a mere shadow of the divine judgment to come. One must praise the sisters for having the courage to stand against such wickedness, to reveal the deceitful works of darkness – for Ephesians 5:11 exhorts us, “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” Let us pray for these victims, for their healing, and for the restoration of their spirits. Let us also pray for Michael Tobin, that he may repent genuinely in his heart and seek the Lord’s forgiveness. Only through sincere repentance and turning away from sin can he hope to find redemption, for our God is just but also merciful (1 John 1:9). As for our society, let us be vigilant, placing our trust not in man, but in the Lord, and live by His statutes, guiding our actions with the morality and the righteousness of Scripture, which is the bedrock upon which our faith, our lives, and yes, even our laws, must stand firm.
