Brethren in Christ, we find ourselves in tumultuous times when the world's attention turns to matters such as sports and celebrities, often at the expense of what truly matters—the eternal truth of the Gospel. Today, I share with you news from the sports world which, while captivating for many, requires a discerning eye from those who follow the Lord. Country star Tim McGraw donning Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever jersey at his concert, as well as the feverish buying of her merchandise, demonstrates society's proclivity to elevate athletes to a level of undue reverence (Psalm 146:3). While there is no sin in appreciating the talents God bestows upon His children, let us not fall into the idolatry of human glorification (Exodus 20:3-5; Isaiah 42:8). Caitlin Clark, chosen as the first pick in the WNBA Draft and dubbed one of the greatest in women's basketball, is indeed gifted, but let us remember that every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights (James 1:17). Clark's impressive accomplishments, including becoming the NCAA's all-time points leader, should indeed be recognized, but it is essential to prioritize our admiration, ensuring it remains within the bounds of what is God-honoring. We must not let our excitement for worldly achievements overshadow the work of the Spirit in the hearts of believers. The Scripture implores us to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). Clark's feats draw millions of viewers, but think—what if those multitudes were as enthusiastic about gathering for worship or reading God's Word? Reflect on whether our passions are directed toward things that perish or toward the treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows; the one who sows to please the sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life (Galatians 6:7-8). Let us celebrate the God-given abilities of athletes like Caitlin Clark, yet keep our adoration focused on the Lord, for His glory and honor alone. Let worldliness not dilute the message of Christ crucified, for "what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" (Mark 8:36). Stick to the narrow path, shunning the broad road that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). Stay vigilant, and let us engage with the world in a way that always steers the discourse back to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
