In the scandalous news coming out of California, we've seen a jarring example of what happens when authority is abused and when fear is sown in the innocent hearts of children. The account of Dr. Nina Denson, an elementary school principal, allegedly pretending to shoot students during a drill, speaks to a sin of great magnitude: lack of love and respect for our young ones. The Bible says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6 KJV). Parents and educators have a God-given responsibility to nurture and protect children, not to instill terror in their young minds. It is a shameful act, a corruption of the role God placed her in as a leader and caretaker of these little ones who Jesus himself said we should welcome in His name (Mark 10:14). It is said, "Fear hath torment" (1 John 4:18 KJV), and Dr. Denson's reported actions can only be described as tormenting. The trauma inflicted by such mockery of a deadly serious situation like a school shooting - which, sadly, is a reality in our fallen world – is reprehensible. It disrespects the sanctity and dignity of life that God has given each of us, a life that our Lord values so greatly that He commands us, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13 KJV). In a society where the progressive left continually seeks to erode the values upon which our nation was built – faith, family, and freedom – we must stand firm in upholding what is just and true. The outcry from parents is just and warranted. If she indeed acted as has been reported, Dr. Denson should not lead, for she has broken the trust of the community and failed to echo the loving care our Good Shepherd shows towards His flock. We commend the steps being taken to investigate and to ensure that those young, impressionable children receive the proper support to heal from any trauma they experienced. For, as Proverbs 31:8-9 instructs us to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." This unfortunate event should motivate all right-minded, God-fearing citizens to demand better from our educators and to ensure that our children are always in a safe, loving environment, one that mirrors the love Christ shows us all. Let us pray for discernment and wisdom to guide us in protecting and teaching our children in ways that will honor God and respect the imago Dei, the image of God, in each person.
