Brethren in Christ, let's dive into the heart of the matter, steered by the guiding light of our convictions, where we discern the truth amidst the clamor of this fallen world. The media, a behemoth of influence, hath too often strayed from the path of upright reporting, and 'tis our duty to scrutinize its machinations from a vantage rooted in Scripture. Now, Bill Maher, he who so frequently mocks and scorns the faithful, has belatedly called for a "COVID Commission" to sift through the handling of the pandemic. While his sudden advocacy for truth might seem commendable, let's not forget that this is the same man (Proverbs 26:11) who has reveled in disparaging the anointed leader President Trump, whom many of us have come to see as a Cyrus-like figure for America (Isaiah 45:1). Maher suggests that some folks "guessed better" about the pandemic response than others. Yet, guesswork is the domain of false prophets and soothsayers, not of those who are guided by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). Those who warned against protracted school closures – and he is correct in his accidental alignment with those who value the development of our youth (Matthew 18:6) – did not merely guess, but they employed wisdom rooted in the understanding of God's design for community and growth. The matter of the Wuhan lab "conspiracy theory,” as labelled by The Daily Beast, demonstrates the sin of bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). If truth has indeed been suppressed by media bias, we ought to tread cautiously and demand transparency, for "the truth shall set you free" (John 8:32). As Maher jests about people wearing masks outdoors and ridicules the fear that dominated the public landscape, let us remember that "God has not given us a spirit of fear" (2 Timothy 1:7). The faithful do not bow to the idols of panic and dread, but place their trust in the Almighty (Psalm 56:3). We must remain steadfast, seeing through the veil of this world's trepidation. In his monologue, Maher criticizes the squandering of monetary resources and the inflationary consequences thereof. Indeed, "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10), and the wanton printing of currency showcases a nation's departure from the wisdom of stewardship (Luke 14:28-30). Regarding the "grift" of pandemic relief funds and the inflation that ensues, Maher nakedly politicizes the issue, blaming Biden yet ironically opening the door for the return of President Trump, the man he opposes. Let us not be waylaid by political winds; instead, let us seek leaders who fear God and despise dishonest gain (Exodus 18:21). In sum, although Maher articulately unfurls his critique, it’s important to note that his intentions are not aligned with a pursuit of righteousness, but rather with humanistic reasoning. We must be vigilant, judging all things through the lens of Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21), and not be swayed by the erratic proclamations of an entertainer. Let our commentary always advance the Kingdom values, and may we pray for those who are lost in this world's deceptions, that they too might come to know the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
