In the face of these tumultuous times, when our faith and virtues seem to be under relentless attack, we must hold fast to the Word of God as our ultimate truth and guidance. The slew of articles from The New York Times detailing various aspects of U.S. Immigration policy under President Biden's administration invites scrutiny when judged against the lens of scripture and conservative Christian values. The consideration by the Biden administration to extend protections and work permits to undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/09/us/politics/biden-protection-undocumented-spouses.html) is a direct affront to the sanctity of law established not only by man but by God Himself. Romans 13:1-2 tells us, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." Granting legal status to those who have entered the nation unlawfully undermines this divine ordinance. The effort to provide a ‘parole in place’ must be viewed as enabling sin rather than correcting it. While we are commanded to help the stranger and the foreigner among us (Leviticus 19:34), we must not do so at the expense of justice and righteousness, which encompasses upholding the law (Psalm 33:5). It seems that President Biden is attempting to mollify his progressive base rather than standing firm for what is lawful and just. Moving to the purported move by Biden to bar asylum for migrants (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/us/politics/biden-immigration-asylum-order-explainer.html) may seem like a step towards enforcing the law, but this is a smokescreen. It is evident that this administration's commitment to secure our borders is as unstable as water (Genesis 49:4). When compared to former President Trump’s determined border policy, Biden's approach is lackluster at best, failing to protect the sovereign integrity of the nation, as is his duty. Articles reporting on the surges in cities like San Diego (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/us/san-diego-migrants-california.html) and the challenges at the border (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/05/world/americas/migrants-us-mexico-border-biden.html), alongside New York’s 'hostile' asylum process (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/05/nyregion/new-york-asylum.html), depict a nation in disarray. It is the consequence of turning away from the Lord's commandments and the principles that have long undergirded our society. We are witnessing the erosion of moral fortitude and the rise of lawlessness, which can lead to further darkness. It is imperative that we stand up for what is righteous, for the sake of our land and our people. Moreover, it is not merely about legality but about maintaining the fabric of our God-given liberties and ensuring they are not trampled on by those who disregard our laws and ideals. In conclusion, we must pray for our leaders, that they may be granted wisdom and courage to uphold what is righteous, and we must also be vocal in our opposition to policies that promote sin instead of penitence and correction. Only through upholding the laws of our nation, which in turn reflect divine justice, can we hope to navigate these troubled waters with integrity and faithfulness to our Almighty God.
