My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, as I bring you news today, it is with a heavy heart. The wicked and grievous actions of Hamas terrorists have resulted in the senseless and brutal deaths of six cherished souls, including one of our own, an Israeli-American, Hersh Goldberg-Polin. This tragedy, an affront to God's vision of peace and the sanctity of life, highlights the depth of evil that prowls this world, sowing discord and chaos (John 10:10). The Lord tells us that He is "near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18), and surely the families and loved ones of these martyrs are encased in such unimaginable sorrow. Their pain echoes throughout our community as we unite in prayer, knowing that such barbarity against God's children must not go unanswered. The nefarious act that saw these hostages murdered by Hamas is nothing short of demonic. Violence, murder, and terrorism are vile sins that defy the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13). The terrorists of Hamas have not only stolen lives but also the peace and security of a nation and its people. As Vice President Harris correctly asserted, "Hamas is an evil terrorist organization" with a now even heavier weight of American blood on its hands. It is righteous for President Biden to declare that the leaders of Hamas will answer for these crimes. Indeed, the scriptures teach us that God will bring judgment on those who commit wickedness and that they shall not escape His wrath (Romans 12:19). The grievous actions of terrorists such as Hamas are a clear and present danger to all that is virtuous and just, and their days of tyranny must be brought to an abrupt end. Yet, amid this darkness, we must also focus our prayers on the men and women of the Israel Defense Forces, who bravely risk their lives in the pursuit of security and liberation for the oppressed. As supporters of law and order, and protectors of the innocent, we stand shoulder to shoulder with these soldiers and their mission to dismantle the reign of terror inflicted by Hamas. Finally, let us not lose sight of what is truly at stake. We are engaged in a spiritual battle, not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world (Ephesians 6:12). Let this tragedy be a wake-up call to all Christians that now more than ever, we must gird ourselves with the full armor of God and stand firm against the surge of evil in our times. May God comfort the families of Hersh Goldberg-Polin and the other victims of this atrocity, and may He guide our leaders to take decisive action against the forces of darkness that wish to destroy life and liberty. Amen.
