In the tragic case of Senior Airman Roger Fortson's untimely death, we are faced with a deeply concerning situation that raises numerous questions about the conduct of those responsible for upholding law and order. This is a sobering moment that compels us to reflect on Romans 13, which teaches us about the governing authorities instituted by God, and it is from this perspective that I offer my analysis. Firstly, it is imperative to exemplify utmost respect for our law enforcement officers, as they are the agents of God to bring punishment on the wrongdoer (Romans 13:4). However, when an innocent man, especially a servant of this nation like Senior Airman Fortson, is taken from us in such a horrific manner, we must ask ourselves where the line must be drawn. One cannot help but feel a righteous anger, much like Jesus did in the temple courts (John 2:15), toward a potential miscarriage of justice and an apparent breach of protocol that led to the death of an individual who was simply exercising his Second Amendment right to bear arms. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists seven things the Lord detests, and among them are "hands that shed innocent blood." Although our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Senior Airman Fortson, we must also demand transparency and accountability. The call for the immediate release of body cam footage is not only justified but necessary to ascertain the truth and ensure that justice is served according to biblical standards. Attorney Ben Crump's involvement, while contentious to some, should not distract from the core issue—whether an innocent man's life was taken erroneously, and what that means for the integrity of our justice system. The high-profile nature of Crump's previous cases should not cloud our judgment or influence our quest for the truth. Furthermore, as 1 Corinthians 14:33 states, "For God is not a God of confusion but of peace," there must be a clear and honest investigation to bring peace to this situation. Confusion, misinformation, and lack of communication have no place in a God-fearing society that seeks justice and righteousness. It should also be noted that Senior Airman Fortson's death resonates with other similar cases where law enforcement's fatal mistakes have resulted in the loss of innocent Black lives. This troubling pattern must compel us as a society to scrutinize our systems and procedures to ensure that they are aligned with biblical principles of justice and the sanctity of life. Finally, let us pray for the law enforcement officers involved, that they may be guided by wisdom and justice, and for the Fortson family, that they may be comforted in their time of loss. And let us pray for our nation, that we may, through God's grace, continue to strive for a justice system that upholds the value of all lives and reflects God's perfect justice. For as Jesus said in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." Let us be those peacemakers in the pursuit of truth and justice.
