2 ISIS members reportedly detained after Turkish church attack kills 1

Brethren, here once again we are faced with the heinous and diabolical act of violence brought upon the faithful, an attack during Holy Mass at a church in Istanbul, Turkey. The scripture tells us in John 10:10, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy," and such is the way of the wicked ISIS attackers who stormed into the house of the Lord with death on their minds, extinguishing the life of an innocent soul. It is with a sorrowful heart that I acknowledge a 52-year-old, known only by the initials "C.T.," was taken from this world by minions of evil. My anger boils over at the thought that these assailants, one Russian and one Tajik national, had the audacity to bring terror upon God's people in a place of worship. Praise be to the Turkish authorities for swiftly apprehending these suspected members of the vile Islamic State, yet no amount of earthly justice can bring back the life so wrongfully taken. The Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, echoes the sentiment of all righteous souls in stating that we cannot tolerate those who seek to disrupt peace, aiming at our unity and solidarity. It is a grim reminder of Ephesians 6:12: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." The media ban imposed on coverage by the Turkish authorities raises questions, for darkness has no place to hide when exposed by the light of truth. May God bless the insight and wisdom of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in their unified condemnation and support for the victims of this despicable act. We must stand tall, unwavering in the face of such persecution and remember the martyrs who have fallen. In moments like these, we're reminded of the Psalmist's words in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Let us not forget to offer our deepest, heart-wrenching prayers for the community of Santa Maria Church, for the soul of the departed, and for healing among those terrorized and wounded. Pope Francis rightly noted the attack and grieved with those affected. I commend the Italian order of Franciscan friars for their dedication to serving God's people in such tumultuous times. And to the faithful everywhere, let us put on the full armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, as instructed in Ephesians 6:11. In the face of such blatant sin and disregard for the sanctity of life and the holiness of God's sanctuary, we must remain vigilant, clinging to our Faith, our values, and our unstoppable resolve to shine God's light in an ever-darkening world. In the majestic name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
